I just got diagnosed with this and I can't believe it! I love running/walking/hiking, but I'm going to take a long break and not do any of those things until I recover. My doctor recommended an injection, but I decided not to have it because I wanted to do more research and I'm going to try his other suggestions and your. But do you think I can still run/walk/hike again? He told me it can come back if I don't take care of it. I am so worried :(
Sorry to hear about the recent diagnosis - the good news is there are a lot of treatment options. This is quite a common diagnosis and can be managed well, with non-operative management. There are lots of options. Start with ball massage under the arch, and avoiding any side to side compression like in tight shoes.
@@freestylefeet2063 But do you think running /hiking still an option or I have to completely stop doing all of those. What are some exercises you recommend?
Yes, I would still keep moving - hiking yes, running - see how it feels. Footwear choice is crucial here - try on lots of styles. Here is a good place to start using this ball - ua-cam.com/video/1bJxJiO-Fa0/v-deo.html also start using toe spacers as soon as you can, these can make a difference within weeks. These are ours that we recommend - Flamingo Feet. freestylefeet.com.au/products/flamingo-feet-silicone-toe-activators
I have just discovered your channel. Thank you so much for sharing. I wanted to ask where would I get a band like that? I have bunions in both my big toes. I blame years of squeezing my feet into high heels. People don’t take care of their feet when they are younger, then they have all sorts of problems later in life.
So glad we could help! It is amazing what you can achieve with simple tools and education. This band is available online at freestylefeet.com.au/
Bunions are hereditary. I have one on my left feet like my father. If shoes were the cause, why doesnt my right feet have it? Nonsense video with no podiatry knowledge. But we should be wearing wide toe box footwear.
Bunion formation are due to a variety of factors, intrinsic and extrinsic. Genetics is certainly one of these factors and cannot be altered so we don't go into detail for that factor. Footwear is absolutely a known factor, alongside others such as foot pronation, gait pattern, hip function, foot muscle strength and others. If on one side, I would look at these other biomechanical factors and I suspect you might find your answer.
@@freestylefeet2063 you have little podiatry knowledge. You have physiotherapy knowledge and that's it. I suggest picking up a book on podiatry book. They have found bunions in non show wearing populations.
Well thanks for the input - I have worked alongside some of Australias top podiatrists and surgeons for the past 24 years. A post graduate masters in sports, training with foot and ankle specialists from around the world, chiropractors, osteos and other foot and ankle experts.
@@freestylefeet2063 you know very little my friend. Bunions can never be fixed without surgery. You are going against classical knowledge.
Does this method work for a ballet dancer's hammer toe?. The bunion sits more on top than side, for me.
Toe spacers can also help with hammer toes yes, as they help to prevent and reduce the clawing that causes it. Also spend time stretching the long toe flexors, this will also help
Barefoot shoes. Look into barefoot shoes. Many have improved their misalignment with very wide toe boxes and no heal. Bunions largely started with pointy shoe fashion. Even a 'normal' regular nowaday shoe crowds toes together unnaturally close, even if we dont feel any particular pain or so. It would rather be a miracle to not get any bunions at some point if wearing regular shoes year after year.
Thanks and yes I agree with you - although interestingly the footwear as a cause is still VERY controversial - although I am not sure why!
@@freestylefeet2063 yes, one can really wonder why. Perhaps as with many other rather simple and potentially permanently effective solutions to common health issues there is too little to gain for all the industries out there. Money. The fact that you can completely restore your health and beat most of the diseases with healthy eating and exercise is also still 'controversial'.. .because so so many types of businesses out there are built around diseases and chronic or 'age related' issues. Turning the blind eye to the actual root of the problem of an issue is perhaps much more beneficial from a commercial point of view... more often than not. Problems create profit. Sadly but true.

My left foot has a bunion. I need a ball to help me.
a ball will help for sure
Were to get the tape?
Hey there- take a look at the description below, I have listed a few options including those on Amazon.
Doctor thanks for blessing us with your knowledge.
You are most welcome , hopefully it helps people in some way
My right foot looks identical !! I cracked the bone on a trmpoline when I was 15 and it never healed properly and a bunion developed . I can't wear heels because I can't bend my big toe at all . Might try this !!
Oh wow! see what you can do!
Nice shoe, but definitely no minimalist shoe ;)
I usually suggest 3 x week
I already have bunions since I was 12 years old! Got them from my dad’s side of the family! I’m going to try this my bunion don’t really hurt me that much only if I walk or stand to long
Absolutely, give it a go and see what happens!
Is it. Possible to show the result after treatment? thx 🙏
I have been trying to get in touch with Jo for some time now, but she has not returned to the clinic. So unfortunately, I don't know what her feet are currently doing.
Thank you so much! I've seen how severe bunions and bunionettes became in my relatives, and want to avoid that in myself now that a bunionette has started.
You are welcome- most importantly avoid narrow shoes . They practice spreading the toes apart every day as an exercise to strengthen the abductor muscles. Wearing toe spacers will also really help- build up to 4hrs/day if you can
Thank you. 🙏😊
This is only tips. No cure for it. You can inject steroids, alcohol and cortisone....... it's only temporary. Even extensive inner soles do not cure it! No doctor, try surgery!
I am not opposing surgery , our approach is it should be the last resort. As their are complications and there are often issues with scarring and even recurrence
How often should you do this?
I would suggest 3 x week, daily might be a little too much. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.
Jo, you got some cute toes. =P
What shoe would you recommend with the tape
Great question - there are a few options, but the key is they MUST be wide enough without putting any pressure on it. We like brands like ALTRA, LEMS for example and we also suggest Crocs as a good option. Here is a video on our channel I just made on this topic....ua-cam.com/video/chn9rgSnmaY/v-deo.html take a look and see what you think?
Mine is a numbness on top of my left feet
Ok it might be worth looking higher up through the front of the shin and lower leg. Definitely get a professional assessment for peripheral nerve issue.
I have buldging discs in my low back. L5 and S1. I have what feels like Morton's Neuroma in my left foot but as I understand pinched nerves at L5 can cause similar issues since L5 is the nerve root for toes 3&4.
Thanks for the message- yes precisely . It can be either - I would suggest a professional capable of assessing the back, the nerve pathway and the foot is the best option. A clinical diagnosis is most important and then if available imaging to support that can also be helpful in confirming that diagnosis
I fully agree. Have been wearing crocs since I fractured my feet & had a Morton's Neuroma. They work very well for me.
Awesome thanks for the feedback too!
My only question is do they provide adequate ankle suport? I have been told by podiatrists that i should only wear shoes that properly support my ankles.
Great question and thanks for asking it - do you have any arch or ankle issues? Sometimes we might require more support for a given issue or pathology in which case the Crocs may not give adequate support but for general everyday use it would be interesting to test them out and see what your feet tell you ?
Ok. I'll give it a try I tend to lean on the inside of my feet when I walk.
Thank you. This is helpful and makes a lot of sense. My right foot has bunion a long time. This is best news I have heard and have been to foot specialist. They say wait, when bad enough operate. I do not want operation. This is begining to affect bone in middle on side of my foot, with pain.God bless you for sharing on videos.
You are most welcome and here is another great video from a foot doctor in Michigan who has great tips as well: ua-cam.com/video/8yKY4Rf-OGk/v-deo.htmlsi=3NL1P_1IbTA9P2hA
This guy is a hack! Instilling g fear is so wrong! Especially since It’s not about restriction - it’s about pain from arthritis! You can’t prevent arthritis with his exercises!!!! I had the surgery.
Thanks for your kind words.....It is about restriction, that is one of the early signs - if left alone, it progresses. I am simply trying to educate about awareness to avoid an unnecessary procedure. Clearly too late for you I am sorry
Did it actually work?
Hey there, we have been trying to get her back to the clinic for a review but sadly she has not been contactable. I am looking for another patient happy to be filmed... stay tuned.
She has Tailors bunions (on her pinky toe side) also, worse on her left foot. Why didn't you talk about them? I have Tailors and they are very painful!! This my first time seeing someone with both type bunions. Her feet must be in serious pain 😖. I have a different brand of toe separators just like that. i wear New Balance shoes because I can get them in wide. i have a roller massager for my feet with trigger point knob on one end. it really relieves the stress in my feet, at the end of my day. But none of these things have fixed/corrected my Tailor bunions. The pain has decreased a little, but after a day of work, my dogs are barkin 🤣. I go barefoot at home, and only wear shoes, when I leave the house. In warm weather, I wear slides unless I'm going to work. I hate shoes now!
Hi there , yes indeed she does have Tailors bunions as well. Interestingly they are not very painful. I talk about Tailors bunions in another video but the cause and treatment is largely based on the same principles
Hello, great video, thank you! I have been running 3x 11 km per week with Altra Escalante for over 10 years. Recently I've been interested in barefoot shoes for running, but I'm afraid my feet will hurt in these because there's virtually no cushioning. What do you think please? I usually run on tarmac, concrete...
Hey there no problems- I tend to agree with you, without any cushioning in them barefoot shoes are troublesome for many of our patients , the Altra are a great in between. That being said a great way of building up slowly is to do some runs barefoot 1km only at a local grass oval if possible. Slowly build up
@@freestylefeet2063
Ok fantastic work so far and I tend to agree with you , after having tried to move to barefoot- I ended up sore big time and so went back to the Altra again. More time and patience required I think but as always it is a case by case basis. My feet are pretty messed up from a lot of hours in tight ski racing boots
A good majority of people with bunions are abducted as I trust you are aware. These days, surgery is recommended. They are abducted due to improper foot tracking. My patent pending device actually corrects the problem as well the other three basic problems of the feet as well: over pronation, supination, abduction, adduction and associated leg and back problems. My orthotic/shoe insert stimulates the propriorceptors of the feet along the strain line of the foot. The "S Curve Foot Path" is eliminated saving about 20% of the physical path and adding about 8% walking speed to boot.
Yes, agreed. Sounds interesting
I developed the idea back in 1990. I went for a patent and after about three requests for further info from the US Patent Office, the Patent Atty claimed the Patent Office, rejected the Application. Thirteen years later I called the Patent Office to complain about a product somewhat like my design and to inquire as to the possibility of restarting my Application. The Examiner said my Application couldn’t be revived but asked me for my Application number. He left and returned and stated that they didn’t reject my Application, but requested further info. Be careful who you put your trust in! Due to an improvement of my invention, I have the device Patent Pending. All the best, SBSteele
Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge.
My pleasure!
Made a gradual transition to minimalist barefoot shoes first - Vapor Gloves & VFFs - but would still get pain in the ball of the foot at times. Runs were largely limited to no more than 2-4 miles for a few years, and progress was slow. I've since then transitioned to the Altra Escalante as daily drivers and could not be more pleased, and the profile works very well for my foot shape, short and wide. I still run and train in my barefoot shoes, but the ability to interchange has given my foot some much needed breathing room to strengthen and adapt on its own terms. I suffered an injury (which has completely healed) in 2019 - doing a calisthenics type of workshop while wearing VFFs. Following the workshop, whenever i was in the "active toes" position (like a calf raise, for on my hands & knees but on the balls of my foot), I would get a sharp pain on the ball of my foot. It felt like the tissue in that area was ripping apart... some of the most disturbing and awful pain I've ever felt. The same, if I tried to do a calf raise on the painful foot, it was just excruciating. Is this what's called metatarsalgia? Did the pain mean that something was torn or damaged? It healed by itself with rest and patience.
It does sound like metatarsalgia, but this is a little bit of a an umbrella term, which includes bursitis, plantar plate issues, neuroma (very possible), bone stress and others. Best to get a formal diagnosis then you can move forwards with a plan
I quit bottle drinks, sugar , coffee for 3 weeks and instead I drink water only, and the pain is gone since day one I started. Glory to God
Great work
It sounds to me he forgot to tell her the most important thing, I mean she should stop using shoes that have a small toebox and heels. She should start wearing barefoot shoes.
That is a helpful tip yes, thanks
Woke up with a numb foot after this.
That sounds like the stretch might have been a little too much
What if there are no shoes that are wide enough for my feet 😅
Have you looked at some brands like LEMS, Vivo and in running shoes - brands like Altra? They have wide , natural shaped forefoot areas that should accomodate a bunion or bunionette
@@freestylefeet2063 I actually do own some Altras but all of these shoes are just for 2E feet while mine are more like 4E wide.
All companies design this type of shoes then what we do change shoe model or exercise
Shoes certainly are a component of the formation of a bunion, luckily there are some brands out there that have a wider, natural style toe box
Does these exercises work for tailors bunion too. . If those at the base of the pinky toe?
Yes, they absolutely do - the principles are identical, you just need to swap the big toe for the little toe!
does this work for genetically given bunions?
Genetics is certainly one of the known contributing factors - there are a whole host of others factors that are modifiable so absolutely this applies. If you really want to deep dive into those factors and address each of them- I created a course called Banish Bunions which is worth a look at. The link is in the description for you
Bunions are there to stay unless intervened with surgery.
Not necessarily at all - especially if caught early and either mild or moderate category
🎉 "promo sm"
Could you do an update of her feet?
funny the doctor is wearing narrow shoes haha
They are a wide fitting RM Williams boot - no toe squashing in those but good spotting all the same

Why does the spacer at the big toe never stay’s in place it always pops up and defeats the purpose of aligning the big toe.
Yes this can be tricky - wearing socks over the top can help.
Sometimes it makes my pain worse ( on top of my foot )
It could be stretching and adapting - which is a positive however if pains persists then definitely get a clinical assessment
